CranioSacral Therapy

Frequently Asked Questions about CranioSacral Therapy

What is CranioSacral Therapy?
First, the CranioSacral system is a functioning physiological system of membranes that encloses the brain and spinal cord, the Central Nervous System.  CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a very gentle, light touch approach that focuses on normalizing the function of the Central Nervous System. CranioSacral Therapy improves health and function by easing tension patterns and restrictions in the membranes of the Central Nervous System to allow for the other systems (musculoskeletal, lymphatic, vascular, endocrine, digestive, and respiratory) in the body to balance & self-correct. While other techniques focus specifically on osseous or muscular structures, CST focuses on tensions and restrictions in the membranes and fasciae to ease discomfort, pain, dysfunction, and improve whole-body health and well-being. A complementary therapeutic modality that can be used alone or with other medical treatment as part of an integrative approach to health and wellness, CranioSacral Therapy is administered on a comfortable treatment table with the client fully clothed.

Where do these restrictions in the body come from?
Traumatic events, accidents, injuries, surgeries, scar tissue, inflammation, diseases, strains, sprains, stress, tension, and emotional trauma are some of the factors that compromise optimal health and function. Over time, the increased energy expended by the body to compensate for abnormal tensions and restrictions can eventually lead to depletion and dysfunction. The body has the ability to self-correct, and CranioSacral Therapy helps to facilitate the body’s inherent therapeutic process by activating its self-healing mechanism.  CranioSacral Therapy can be very effective to support post-operative recovery and post-traumatic healing.

How can CranioSacral Therapy help me?
With its focus on the Central Nervous System, CranioSacral Therapy can be effective for a variety of conditions associated with stress, pain, and dysfunction. Few body structures have more influence over health and well-being than the Central Nervous System. Since the Central Nervous System is connected to every part of the body, the whole person - body & mind - is benefited by this gentle therapy.  This technique works on issues in the tissues caused by accidents, injuries, and emotional trauma. By freeing the Central Nervous System to perform at its best, CranioSacral Therapy can ease pain and stress, strengthen resistance to disease, and enhance overall health and well-being. CST has been known to ease a wide spectrum of pain, illness, and dysfunction, including: migraines & headaches, chronic neck & back pain, stress & tension-related conditions, chronic fatigue, insomnia, fibromyalgia, TMJ Syndrome, PTSD, Depression & Anxiety, as well as many other conditions. In addition, CST is increasingly recognized and used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease.

What can I expect to experience during a CranioSacral Therapy session?
The initial visit is a longer appointment, 75-90 minutes, so we can get to know one another.  At the start of your initial visit, you will complete an intake form, and we will discuss your health history and wellness goals. At the end of the appointment, we will discuss your experience, my findings, & recommendations for further therapy, if applicable.
CranioSacral Therapy is administered on a comfortable massage table with the client fully clothed in non-restrictive or loose-fitting attire without belts, zippers, buckles, collars, etc.  CranioSacral Therapy uses a very light touch approach, just enough to allow the body to relax, ease restrictions and dysfunction, and encourage the body’s inherent ability to heal itself. Unlike a deep massage that must work through greater pressure to the deep muscles, the CranioSacral System has a very subtle movement rhythm and responds best to light touch. Sessions are generally deeply relaxing, creating feelings of warmth or gentle pulsing in the areas being supported.  Shifts may occur during therapy or during the hours and days following the appointment. Occasionally, the body has adapted to malfunction, and once the compensation is located and we get closer to easing the restriction, the suppressed pain re-surfaces before resolving itself. The body may be re-experiencing a previous trauma or injury as it is reorganizing in the tissues.  This may take a few days. Any re-appearance of dormant pain offers opportunity for more complete resolution of an issue.

How many sessions will I need before I notice improvement in my condition?
Healing is a process. Because each individual presents with unique physical and emotional experiences that impact current health, therapeutic response to CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is highly individual. Injuries, illnesses, surgeries, stress, medications, nutrition, daily activity, childhood trauma, and many other factors affect our minds, bodies, and health. Therefore, the number of sessions needed to meet your personal wellness goals will be unique to you. Because CranioSacral Therapy is so deeply relaxing, most CST clients enjoy monthly sessions simply for the calming & balancing benefits.  However, CranioSacral Therapy can also be used as part of an integrative approach to health and wellness. Like other complementary health modalities, the effects and benefits of CST are cumulative, so usually about 4 treatments (more, depending on the number & severity of health challenges) about one week apart is a good rule of thumb to initiate improvement in function and symptoms and help manage health challenges.  Given that CST is a very light touch therapy that targets the contributing factors, shifts may be subtle at first. Unlike some conventional types of treatment that focus on symptoms and prescribe band-aid pharmaceutical relief, CST is noninvasive & nontoxic and virtually free of side effects due to the gentle nature of the therapy.

What is the fee for a CranioSacral Therapy session?
$75 per (60-75 min) session.  Specials are available for multiple-session packages.
